Berlin R. Compton, 93, of Corsicana, passed away on Friday, Sept. 19, 2008 in Corsicana.

He was born in Italy, Texas to William Compton and Sallie Sims Compton on April 4, 1915. Berlin served his country in World War II in the Army serving in the Europe and Pacific Theaters. The 36th Division, he and other men from Italy were serving in, was called into service prior to the beginning of the United States’ involvement in the war. He attended Officer Candidate School and served as a Captain with the 86th Blackhawk Division in France, Belgium and Germany. Prior to going to Japan he was recalled to the States where he was promoted to Major.

Following the his military service he was the owner of Parkway Food Store in Corsicana on Seventh Avenue and was a member of the Corsicana Masonic Lodge #174 for 50 years. Berlin was also a member of First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Sims Compton, in 1982.

Survivors include daughters, Barbara Wyatt and husband James of Lansing, Kan. and Beverly Mahan and husband Sonny of Lufkin; granddaughter Becky Hardy and husband Ferrand of Flower Mound; great grandson Austin Hardy of Flower Mound; brother, W.A. Compton and wife Helen of Irving; sister, Elizabeth Chenowth of Corsicana; many nieces and nephews; two very close friends, Kay Patrick and Mary Tyykila Muhvich; and caregiver Jackie Knighten.

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Grayson Glass officiating, followed by Masonic Rites. Interment will follow at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Billy Bob Collier, Dan Greer, James Sykes, David Matthews, Scott Tyykila and Ronnie McGaha.

In lieu flowers the family asks that memorials be made to the, First Baptist Church 510 West Collin Corsicana, Texas 75110.
