Josh Trees graduated from Italy High school at 17, went to Hill College and received his associates degree. At the ripe old age of 19 he purchased his grandfather’s business, Best Disposal, when his grandfather decided he did not want it anymore.

Josh cashed in a life insurance policy his folks had purchased for him and purchased the garbage trucks from his grandfather. He ran this business for about three years and then partnered up with his father Richard Trees. They ran it together for several more years. His father had suffered some heart problems and decided he and Josh should sell the business.

Trees decided to get into the excavation business when he was building his home by Lake Waxahachie. “I was paying a gentleman to do my dirt work, and I was paying him and I was paying him and I thought, ‘Boy, I could go and buy my own machine and do it myself.’” said Josh. “I went and bought my own machine and finished the dirt work for my house. Then one machine led to two and three and now we have 20.” This is how JK Excavation was born.

JK Excavation began in Waxahachie, “I kept getting bigger and bigger and had more equipment than I had space. I came down to Italy, Texas and purchased the property off 77 Highway,” explained Josh.

The name of Tree’s business is named for Josh and his wife Karen. Karen and Josh have been married for 11 years and have two children, their five year old son Rushton and their 18 month old daughter Elizabeth.

Josh said, “The first year was slow, we did a lot of small jobs. We did a lot of tanks, clearings and driveways. Every year we got more business. We now do a lot of commercial jobs such as churches, stores, strip malls and hotels.” He continued, “We do site work, utilities, dirt work, sewer and water lines, concrete, anything that has to do with excavation.”

Mary Putman, Josh’s mother, is the office manager for JK Excavation, “My mom is my lifeline at the office, she helps me with everything, I could not do it without her,” said Trees.

Kim Holleman, administrative assistant, said," It is very exciting working here and very busy. I love working here, it is like one big family."

Josh does whatever it takes. If they need him to drive a truck, he drives a truck. It they need him to dig trenches and lay pipe, he digs trenches and lays pipe. Whatever it takes, he does it. Josh explained, “Some days we work 12 hour days, sometimes we work 24 hour days. Whatever it takes. We do whatever we have to, to do a good job. Whatever it takes.”

“Josh has been wanting to come home for along time. We had been in Waxahachie and then bought this property in Italy. He just has a head for dealing with all of this. He can just look at floor plans and build a hotel. He is just gifted in this area, just has a head for it. He is doing really well and he can talk to anyone, he is just a gifted kid,” stated Mary Putman.

“I want to try to make Italy a better place. I run an ethical business, I treat everyone like I would like to be treated. When I leave a job I want to feel good,” added Josh.
