Last Thursday evening, October 2, the Titus Women’s Club of Milford had its monthly meeting. The club’s goal is to form a unity among the women of Milford to take pride in their community and make good, productive changes in order to be the best town they can be.

The club has been in existence for about one year. The founder is Jeannie Richardson.

The meeting last week started out with Margaret Horton telling her story of how Milford was a thriving city when she was growing up there. Margaret was born in the Milford area in 1918. She has resided in Milford to this day. She told of how Milford used to have a drugstore, a dry goods store, movie theater, several grocery stores, newspaper, local doctor, hardware store, meat market, a dry cleaners, a barbershop, three cotton gins, blacksmith shop, photo studio, lumber yard, hat shop and even Ennis Business forms was located here. She went on to say at one time they had a train and later on a bus system.

Next up was their guest speaker, Nancy Adrian. Nancy is the volunteer coordinator for Reading & Radio Resource. They help the blind and disabled, especially children with reading disorders. They have a radio station that is a sub-frequency of KERA 90.1 FM. This radio station is dedicated to the blind. They read three different newspapers, novels and store specials daily, so those that can’t read a novel or a newspaper can still enjoy all the news and the enjoyment of a good book. Reading and Radio Resource is a non-profit 501(c)(3) volunteer agency dedicated since 1969 to provide alternatives to reading for those who are visionally or physically impaired. They currently have 24 hours of continuous programming for their listeners.

The next thing on their agenda was to review the various activities they are involved in. They are creating cookbooks and hope to create a newspaper for their town, The Town Newsletter.

The club’s desire is to help meet the town’s needs. “We want to be women who are involved in the community and encourage others to be everything they can be through Christ,” said Richardson.

The next meeting will be the first Thursday of November.

Hope to see you there.
