October 18 is Sweetest Day
Now here is a day dedicated just for your sweetie! It is an opportunity for you to so something special for that sweet and special someone in your life. It doesn’t matter who that person is, or what their relationship is to you. They just have to be “sweet” in order to get a little special attention.
Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in the month of October.
Herbert Birch Kingston, out of Cleveland, Ohio worked for a candy company. He wanted to bring a little happiness to orphans, shut-ins, and the under-privileged. Kingston knew that sometimes they were overlooked on some of the other holidays and thought this day would make them feel special. He wanted to let these people know they were not forgotten. He started Sweetest Day back in the year of 1922 by giving out candy and small gifts. He often used movie stars to distribute the gifts.
The popularity of this holiday spread quickly and the local candy makers in Cleveland began to continue the tradition of giving and called it the sweetest day of the year and gave over 10,000 boxes of candy to over 26 Cleveland area charities their first year.
Today it is celebrated with loved ones and friends. It might be nice to get back to the original holiday and find ways to give candy and small gifts to those in need, or just lonely.
Have a “Sweet” day!
