Lil’ Dab Embroidery
A business of my own, what a scary idea! What if no one would really want to have items embroidered? We have a lot of bills, what if we can’t pay them? Then what?
These were all of the thoughts going through Sandy Dabney’s mind, owner of Lil’ Dab Embroidery, when her husband Pastor Ronnie Dabney came up with the idea of an embroidery business.
Sandy wanted to find work she could do from home instead of having to work in Dallas.
That was all Ronnie had to hear and he got busy thinking of jobs Sandy could do at home. The idea for the embroidery business came to Ronnie when he needed shirts embroidered and this triggered the thought this would be a good business for Sandy to operate from home.
Three years ago, Sandy Dabney and her daughter, Ronda Cockerham started the embroidery business in Sandy’s home in her study.
They purchased their first embroidery machine from Great Notions and set this big machine up in Sandy’s little study. Ronda had just lost her job and decided to start building up the business, which allowed Sandy to continue to work at her job in Dallas until the business was established.
Things were a bit slow at first and business came in little spurts. Sandy and Ronda were worried that there might not be sufficient business. So, Sandy told Ronda not to worry, that she had been praying and asking God to bless their business. As time went on they started to get a little more business and then all of a sudden they were bombarded and got really busy. So busy, that Ronda told her Mom she better stop praying!
Soon, Sandy quit her full time job in Dallas to help run the embroidery business. They bought another embroidery machine, Ronnie built a shop off the side of their home, and they finally were out of the study!
They soon offered screen printing and iron on transfers along with embroidery. Now, all of these new processes were brand new to mother and daughter, along with a new computer program that had all kinds of designs for the screen printing and embroidery. Sandy explained, “We had some good customers that would order some of our new products and we explained we were still learning. They would say you can learn on me. And we did. We even learned how to do two color screen prints. We didn’t have training on this, we had books and programs but we learned it thanks to the patience of our great customers.”
Sandy went on to say, “This has been our best year. We owe all of this to God. The Lord has been just wonderful. The success of our business is to God’s honor and glory.”
