Christmas Dinner at the Uptown Cafe
Doris Mitchell, owner of the Uptown Cafe in downtown Italy, loves her customers. Visitors that dine at the Uptown can see that the relationship between Mitchell and her customers is special. For that reason, she opened the cafe on Christmas Day to share food and fellowship with anyone that wanted to come.
“My customers are like family,” said Mitchell. “I would have invited all of them to my home, but we would not have fit so I opened the cafe. We had such a good time visiting and sharing a meal and memories. I hope we have started a new Christmas tradition for Italy.”
Over 90 people came this year to the 2nd Annual Uptown Christmas Dinner. Most of them brought a dish to compliment the turkey, dressing, ham and brisket that Mitchell served. Four long banquet tables were teeming with homemade vegetables, salads and desserts. Larry Eubank’s deep fried turkey is one of the favorite dishes each year.
“I get as much enjoyment from frying the turkeys as everyone does when they eat them,” said Eubank. “I guess this is going to be an annual event.”
There were new faces this year at the dinner and many people said they would be back next year if Doris decides to do this again. Her customers and family donated money to help defray expenses even though Mitchell did not expect it.
The Uptown Cafe is a very unique place where everyone is welcome. Doris Mitchell is even more unique in today’s world where many businesses are in it just for the buck. Doris gives back to her customers. She loves them and they are very loyal to her for a good reason – love in return.
Christmas Day at the Uptown was a great success. After all, the spirit of love was there along with great food and fellowship – a winning combination anywhere.
