Italy resident had family ties at State Basketball Tournament
On March 12-14, the Boys High School State Basketball Championship Tournament was held in Austin, Texas. Doug Boxell and his Ponder team played in this tournament. Doug has lead teams to the state finals 7 times and has won 5 championships.
This year, the Boxell family really made their mark during the tournament creating a unique family history. Doug’s oldest son, Zach, coached Nazareth to a Championship win in 2007 as well leading them back to the State Tournament this year in the 1A Division.
Doug’s 3rd son, Layne, is doing his student coaching with the Shallowater Mustangs. Shallowater is also competing in Austin for the 2A State Championship.
Doug’s 4th son, Isaiah, will be playing on his father’s team during the tournament.
So this year at Austin, there was three Boxell coaches, coaching three different teams and one Boxell playing on the floor. Doug’s 2nd son Lance, is currently the head basketball coach in Krum, Texas who’s team won Area this season.
Doug’s nephew, Eli Boxell, is the head basketball coach at McCamey High School. Eli is the son of Steve Boxell, Doug’s brother.
The Boxell’s are truly a basketball family and, in more ways than one, made a name for themselves in Austin this year at the State Championship games in Austin. Congratulations to the Boxell family for all they do for High School Basketball across the state.
Doug Boxell is the son of Vivian Boxell Brooks, a 20 year resident of Italy, Texas. Zach, Lance, Layne, Isaiah and Eli are Vivian’s grandchildren.
By the way, the Ponder Lions won a 2nd straight State Championship under Coach Doug Boxell. Coach Zach Boxell’s Nazareth team won their Semifinal Game.
