Megann Lewis, the 2007 Valedictorian of Italy High School, was honored as the Vernon College Outstanding Student of the Year during the Honors Convocation held in April. During the ceremony, Megann was also recognized as the top English student and top Agriculture student.

During the Honors Program, it was also noted that Megann was runner-up in several academic categories including biology, sociology and psychology. She was president of Vernon College’s Student Government Association this year and was honored as their Member of the Year.

In a speech during the ceremony her English teacher shared the following thoughts of Megann:

“Some adjectives to describe Megann as a student are outstanding, superior, exceptional, special, incomparable and first class. She currently posts a 3.94 GPA while serving as Big Meg, the pitcher for the Lady Chaparrals Softball Team. Although she could have attended any Texas university, she came to Vernon College because she wanted to play softball. In my opinion, Megann Lewis is the sharpest tool in the shed.”

In May, Lewis will graduate from Vernon College and has been asked to give their commencement address. She will receive an Associates of Sciences Degree and Associates of Arts Degree. Megann plans to continue her education with a major in Biology at Hardin Simmons University. She will play softball for Hardin Simmons, the 2009 American Southwestern Conference West Division Champions.

Megann is the daughter of Russ and Kelly Lewis of Italy.
