Foundation to fund Meals-on-Wheels’ Kitchen Campaign to build new regional facility

Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties is excited to announce that they are receiving a $100,000 grant from the Amon G. Carter Foundation toward their $4 million campaign to build a regional kitchen facility to serve the elderly and disabled citizens of both counties.

This facility, located in the TXI Railport development in Midlothian, will initially provide nutritious meals to over 3,000 people. The majority of these individuals are elderly citizens, averaging 85 years of age who live on an income of $12,000/year or less.

“We are grateful to the Amon G. Carter Foundation in their dedication to the elderly, and for their support in helping make this project a reality,” stated Vinsen Faris, executive director of Meals-on-Wheels.

Meals-on-Wheels expects to double the number of meals that are served in Johnson and Ellis Counties during the next 2 years due to the growth of the elderly population, as well as the communities they serve.

“The Carter Foundation recognizes the significant population growth in this region, as well as the increase in request for services,” said John Robinson, executive vice president of the Amon G. Carter Foundation.

The new kitchen will significantly lower transportation and production costs. By producing their own meals, the organization will save up to $1 per meal, which equals a $200,000 back into services per year. These savings will allow Meals-on-Wheels to feed more people in need. Construction is scheduled to begin in Fall of 2010.

“We commend the thorough analysis and planning which has taken place in anticipation of this campaign. The size and strategic location of this facility should provide new opportunities for Meals-on-Wheels to expand their services and ensure their future,” added Robinson.
