Meals-on-Wheels and City of Waxahachie Offer Caregiver Workshop

Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties and the City of Waxahachie are co-hosting, “Caring for Our Elders,” a Workshop and Resource Fair on Saturday, November 7 at the Waxahachie Sr. Center.

The Workshop will be a partial-day, from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm, seminar packed full of information for those caring for the elderly, loved ones, or someone with an illness. It is a $5 donation to attend which includes lunch.

“We are excited about offering this workshop with the needed resources to caregivers,” said Amy Jackson, director of development. “It will be day about Caregivers, and how they can better help themselves, and those they care for,” she added.

Andy Crocker, an aging expert with the Area Agency on Aging, will be presenting “Caring for You, Too,” as the event’s keynote. There will be three informative sessions including topics on caring for yourself with a local chaplain, legal issues and resources with Susan Mason, attorney, and an “Toolkit” for caregivers featuring an expert panel with caregivers, physicians and a benefits counselor. In addition, there will be over 15 local vendors at the resource fair.

The event is being underwritten by the North Texas Area Agency on Aging, Care Improvement Plus, and Home Instead Senior Care alongside the presenting sponsors: City of Waxahachie and Meals-on-Wheels.

Meals-on-Wheels began its Caregiver Education program, alongside the other services it provides to the community, over three years ago in response to the growing need for elderly services in the community. Nationwide, over 50 million people choose to care for their loved ones themselves, versus placing them in a nursing or care facility which is very expensive.

Meals-on-Wheels is a community based, non-profit organization serving the homebound elderly and disabled residents of Johnson and Ellis Counties.
