On Saturday, January 16, Italy High School senior and band member, Ronald Helms represented Italy at the ATSSB Region 8 Jazz Band Concert at MCC in Waco. The concert was the culmination of a process that began in September of 2009 that included auditions, rehearsals, and Saturday’s jazz clinic/concert with world renown jazz artist, Bobby Shew (www.bobbyshew.com).

Mr. Shew worked with the band which consisted of the top jazz players from West, Robinson, Madisonville, Cameron, Troy, China Spring, and of course, Italy. He shared his philosophy of music and numerous life experiences.

After a three hour rehearsal, the students performed at the school’s Performing Arts Center on Saturday evening. The region qualifiers wowed the crowd with a repertoire composed of swing, shuffle, and latin jazz. Unfortunately, photography was strictly prohibited but those in attendance were treated to a good time.
