Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson & Ellis Counties has events planned for its annual “March for Meals” campaign. Today, they hosted area mayors and elected officials for “Mayors For Meals,” as a part of the Campaign. The event included 39 local mayors and elected officials delivering meals in their communities.

“We were excited that so many participated in our event. We hope this helps raise awareness of senior hunger in our community” said Amy Jackson, director of development. “Most of our mayors have been involved with our program in the past, and the national ‘Mayors of Meals’ is an excellent way to continue our relationship,” added Jackson. For some, this was their first time to deliver, and others have been delivering for several years.

In addition to “Mayors for Meals,” Meals-on-Wheels is hosting its annual fundraising benefit, “A Fabulous Forties Fling,” this Saturday, March 27 at the National Guard Armory located at 618 N. Grand in Waxahachie, beginning at 6:30 pm. It will be an evening of swing dancing, dinner, a “live” radio show featuring 1940s celebrities, and chances to win prizes. Tickets are $75 each, or tables for 8 for $1,000 which include happy hour, dinner, photos, and entertainment. Sponsorships are also available at varying levels.

“We encourage anyone who would like to help or be involved anyway that you can; whether that be through volunteering, donating, coming to our event, or just telling others about our services,” commented Amy Jackson, director of development.

“March For Meals” is a national campaign, initiated by Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA), which seeks to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of the local community. Senior nutrition programs across the United States, like Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties, promote “March For Meals” in their local communities through public events, partnerships with local businesses, volunteer recruitment and fundraising initiatives. “Mayors For Meals” is a component of March For Meals that utilizes the involvement of local Mayors and other local elected officials.
