Italy’s Track Team breezes thru Area despite calm winds
What a performance! — The Italy High School Boys & Girls Track Teams competed in nine different events at the Area Track Meet in Alvarado on Wednesday. Italy advanced to Regional in eight of those events. Having such a high percentage of qualifiers for the regional meet is a fantastic honor because, without a doubt, Italy is in a very tough track district and area.
The Gladiators were just having one of those days and it didn’t take head track coach Stephen Coleman long to realize he would need a bus, once again, to get everyone to the regional meet in May.
“You’re gonna need a wider lens to fit my grin in a picture,” expressed a smiling Coach Coleman.

“The Boys and Girls Track Teams had a near perfect day. Kaitlyn Rossa in the 3200m Run and 1600m Run set season bests as did the boys 4 × 100m relay and Ryan Ashcraft in the 800m run, despite being stepped on during the race. Kaytlyn Bales also set a personal best in the shot put,” explained coach Coleman.
Coach Coleman further added, “Everyone competed really well and all are very excited and looking forward to regional. A special thanks to coaches Craig Bales and Stacy McDonald for all they do, to our superintendent Jimmie Malone for his assistance at the starter’s line and to DeeDee and Lee Hamilton for helping all the kids with their stretching, attending to their injuries and timing the races. And thanks to Larry Mayberry, Jr. who unselfishly volunteered to help his teammates during the meet.”
The Regional Qualifiers will compete in a Qualifiers Meet on Saturday, April 24 in Meridian. The Regional Meet begins Monday, May 3 in Palestine.
