Old Gold: Megann Lewis named ASC Pitcher of the Year in her division

Currently a Biology major at Hardin-Simmons University and a member of the Cowgirls Softball Team, 6-foot Junior righthander #13 Megann Lewis was honored by the coaches of the ASC and named the American Southwest Conference West Division Pitcher of the Year.

Lewis transferred from Vernon College where she was twice an all-conference selection. While a pitcher for the Italy High School Lady Gladiators, Lewis was selected the district’s Most Valuable Player two years in a row.

Lewis is the daughter of Russ and Kelly Lewis of Italy and has a younger sister, Jaclynn, who will likely follow in her big sister’s cleat prints. Below are recent headlines regarding Lewis and her accomplishments this season at Hardin-Simmons:

Apr 27, 2010 — Lewis Named Pitcher of the Week for the Third Time:

Hardin-Simmons junior right-hand pitcher Megann Lewis has been named pitcher of the week by the American Southwest Conference for the third time this season.

Lewis went 1-1 with a save, striking out 20 and not allowing an earned run over 16 innings of work. She scattered eight hits – all singles – and walked just two batters. Her loss was a 1-0 duel with Schreiner’s Rebecca Hay.

Mar 22, 2010 — Lewis Earns West Division Player of the Week:

Hardin-Simmons junior Megann Lewis was selected West Division player of the week for pitching.

Lewis tossed the second perfect game in HSU history with a five-strikeout, five-inning gem against Texas Lutheran on Friday where only one ball went out of the infield. On Saturday, Lewis came back with a one-hitter and fanned 10 with just one walk to earn another win against TLU. She has now been named division pitcher of the week twice this season.

Mar 19, 2010 — Lewis Throws Perfect Game As Cowgirls Sweep TLU:

Junior pitcher Megan Lewis threw a perfect game as the Hardin-Simmons’ softball team beat Texas Lutheran 9-0 and the Cowgirls added a 3-1 win in the nightcap to sweep an American Southwest Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon in Seguin.

Lewis retired all 15 batters to move to 5-2 on the year in the circle. She struck out five batters and only one ball got out of the infield. The perfect game was the second in school history and the no-hitter was the fourth in school history. Arin Spence had the last perfect game on March 11, 2005, against Nebraska Wesleyan.

Mar 2, 2010 — Cogdell, Lewis Earn Player of the Week:

Juniors Kelsey Cogdell and Megann Lewis were selected West Division Players of the Week in hitting and pitching.

Cogdell went 4-for-9 with one home run, one double and two RBIs to pace a 3-0 week. Cogdell also scored twice and had two sacrifice bunts.

Lewis threw a one-hit shutout with eight strikeouts to defeat Austin College. Lewis only walked one batter over the six frames.
