Meals-on-Wheels Requests Volunteers throughout Ellis County

Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson & Ellis Counties needs additional volunteers to help get noontime meals delivered to the homebound elderly and disabled residents throughout Ellis County. “With the growing needs in our communities, we are in need of new volunteers,” said Whitney Patterson, volunteer coordinator.

Currently, Meals-on-Wheels has 35 delivery routes providing meals countywide. Meals-on-Wheels depends on its volunteers to deliver to ten communities in Ellis County, which include Bardwell, Ennis, Ferris, Italy, Maypearl, Midlothian, Milford, Palmer, the Red Oak area, and Waxahachie. “At this time, all our communities are in need of additional volunteers,” she continued.

Prepared meals are picked up at locations in each of the communities served, Monday through Friday between eleven A.M. and the noon hour, with delivery times taking no longer than forty-five minutes. Volunteers are provided with detailed directions and instructions, and help when they can, whether it is weekly, a couple of times a month, or simply on an as needed basis.

“For our volunteers who deliver meals, they are not only helping to feed the hungry, they are breaking the isolation that many of these people feel,” Patterson said. “Without our volunteers, what we do would not be possible,” she added.
