Meals-on-Wheels Celebrates the “Greatest Generation”

“Fabulous Forties Fling” planned for March 26

Meals-on-Wheels client Wilma Mach of Ennis religiously tunes her radio to the day’s talk radio shows. She spends her mornings in the kitchen listening to the media moguls at a volume that can be audibly understood from the rutted dirt driveway of her rustic residence. As the Meals-on-Wheels volunteer arrives, she finds her clutching her cane and basking in the crisp breeze through her front door. “What are you doing out here, Mrs. Mach,” she asked. “I’m just looking at the world,” she quipped.

Meals-on-Wheels is part of the reason why our more than 700 clients can continue to enjoy the independence of “looking at the world” from their own front porch. Some of their unique perspectives – their outlooks of the world and insightful experiences from the past – will be highlighted during the upcoming “Fabulous Forties Fling,” taking place Saturday, March 26, at the Texas Motorplex, located between Waxahachie and Ennis. The major event underwriter is Waxahachie Autoplex. Sponsorships and tables are still available at levels with varying benefits.

“Hope you join us in celebrating the ‘Greatest Generation,’ and capture a glimpse from the past through those we serve,” said Paula Baucum, event chairperson.

New this year, a happy hour and swing dance lessons will be available at the event’s “Kickoff event,” open to large sponsors and “early bird” ticket holders. A “Night at the Canteen” sponsored by Subaru with a happy hour, and dance lessons sponsored by Action Automatic Sprinklers will be Friday, February 25 at the Motorplex, beginning at 6 pm.

“There are places still available, but we are filling up fast. Therefore, be sure you have your tickets or sponsorship confirmed,” Baucum added. "With your help, this event will raise over $60,000 to provide meals to the homebound in our area!”
