City council approves plat change for local church

The Italy City Council approved a plat change for the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Tuesday night at a called council meeting.

Bryant Cockran, church member, briefly outlined plans to build a 7,000 square foot building across the street from the current church building.

The church, to be built at the corner of Clark and Harris streets, is approximately two acres and combines four half-acre lots.

He said a 20’ easement surrounds the property as recommended and approved by the planning and zoning commission.

Mayor Frank Jackson reminded those in attendance about a retirement reception for Police Chief C.V. Johns on June 14 form 5 to 7 p.m.

He also reminded everyone about Tour d’ Italia Bike Race planned Saturday, June 18. Judi Rowe, event coordinator, said they need volunteers and vendors for the event.
