Band boosters adopt new guidelines, parents needed

The Italy Band Boosters met recently to adopt guidelines and prepare for the upcoming school year.

The boosters adopted a new set of by-laws that allow school personnel to hold office in the Italy Gladiator Band Booster organization, according to Alysa Kirton, band booster president.

The most important item approved by those in attendance is the requirement for band parents/guardians and students to work in the concession stand in order to be considered for a band scholarship.

Kirton said the same set of band parents work the concession stand each week and said that is not fair to all involved.

“We are raising money for the band organization as a whole,” she said. “All parents with students in the junior high and high school bands should be helping out in the concession stand. This money is being raised for all our band students who go to various competitions and on trips.”

Parents and band students may volunteer to work either varsity or junior varsity/junior high games.

The band will also be selling chocolate later in the school year.

In other business, the band ordered t-shirts similar to those the band members are wearing. These shirts are $15 and will be available for purchase in the concession stand during football games or by contacting Kirton.

Other officers introduced are Mark Jacinto, first vice president and fundraising chair; Doug Nelson, second vice president and scholarship chair; Flossie Gowin, secretary; and Mark Stiles, treasurer.

Upcoming band events, according to Jesus Perez, band director, include the Kerens Marching Invitational Oct. 11 and UIL Marching competition in La Vega Oct. 19.

Band boosters voted to meet the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in the band hall. The first Monday in September falls on Labor Day so the boosters will not meet that day. A called meeting may be held later in the month; otherwise, the group will meet Monday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m.

Parent/guardians may volunteer to work in the concession stand by contacting Kirton at [email protected].
