Obituary: Elizabeth Griffis Reynolds, 1926 – 2012
Born in Durant Oklahoma in 1926 to Vergie Lee Moore and Hubert Randolph “Teddy” Riddle, Elizabeth moved with her family to the Italy area in 1930, where she attended Hamrock and Italy schools, graduating from Italy High in 1944.
Elizabeth married her husband of thirty-four years Dick Jefferson Griffis August 9th, 1946, in a double ceremony with Dick’s cousin Lois Helen Windham and Sam “Seaweed” Reeves.
She was remarried to Joe Reynolds in 1992.
Elizabeth worked as a switchboard operator for Southwestern Bell among other occupations before beginning work for the US Postal Service, retiring from her position as Postmaster of Italy in 1986. She then worked for several years as activities director at the Italy Nursing Home.
Elizabeth is preceded in death by her parents Vergie and Teddy, her husband Dick, her second husband Joe, her daughter Jane Martozie and son Pat Griffis, her niece Kaye Beaty, her brother Carroll Riddle, her brother- and sister-in-law Ivan and Virginia Sawyer, and their son Tommy.
She is survived by her brother Billy Wayne Riddle, his wife Joyce, and their son Randy; grandson Patrick Griffis and his wife Mika; niece Debbie Barnard, her husband Harold, and their children Emily Myers and Erik Barnard; nephew Bill Beaty, and his and Kaye’s children Nicole Barron and Trey Beaty; and daughter-in-law Rebecca Griffis.
Elizabeth was a member of the First Baptist Church of Italy, where she taught Sunday school to generations of congregants; Women’s Missionary Auxiliary; Order of the Eastern Star; and the Fortnightly Club; as well as other civic organizations. Never one to shirk responsibility, she held various positions of leadership in the groups of which she was a part. She was for several years precinct judge for the Democratic Party.
Visitation will be at Boze-Mitchell McKibbin Chapel in Italy on Thursday from six to eight pm. Funeral services will be at two pm on Friday at First Baptist Church in Italy, with Reverend Ronnie Dabney officiating; Reverend Jack Comer will assist. Graveside services will be performed by Reverend Tony Cleaver. Pallbearers will be Kenneth Riddle, Randy Riddle, Harold and Erik Barnard, and Bill and Trey Beatty.
She was spirited, generous, and tireless in her service of God and community. She will be sorely missed.
