Susan Welch-Rodriguez has announced her candidacy for the office of Ellis County Sheriff on the Republican ticket. Mrs. Rodriguez has more than three decades of experience with the Dallas County Sheriff’s office and retired in 2009 collecting more than 100 commendations. She still serves with the Sheriff’s Posse and is the only Ellis County Sheriff candidate that is endorsed by the Dallas County Sheriff Association.

A resident of Ellis County for 24 years, Mrs. Rodriguez is married to Freddy Rodriguez with one adult son and a daughter. Law enforcement is not only part of her life but it has been the life of her family since her great-great grandfather began serving as a Wise County Deputy Sheriff. He subsequently served as Constable Pct. 2, Decatur Chief of Police and City Marshall, Deputy U.S. Marshall, and a Texas Ranger from 1871-1874. Mrs. Rodriguez has a remarkable family tree making her the third generation in her family to serve in law enforcement with her son recently joining the ranks as the fourth generation.

Mrs. Rodriguez grew up in DeSoto with a heritage that has been passed on by her distinguished and widely recognized father, Dr. June Rayfield Welch from Gainesville, TX. Dr. Welch is a well-known Texas historian, attorney, professor, and served as Capitol Policeman in Washington, D.C. working for Lyndon B. Johnson while he was state senator. Many people know Susan’s father from his radio shows “Vignettes of Texas History” aired on KRLD-AM 1080 and “Moments from Texas History” as aired on KAAM-AM 1310 in the 1980s and early 1990s. He is a renowned author of 18 books, most dealing with Texas history. Susan’s mother is Angeline June Curtis-Welch from Tulsa, OK, a piano teacher, painter, and retired Dallas ISD school teacher.

Mrs. Rodriguez said she is running for office because she wants to bring decades of law enforcement experience to bear on crime in Ellis County. “I spent the majority of my career on the front lines fighting crime in Dallas County with a population of more than two million and embracing every minute of making the streets safe for the citizens. Now is the time for me to put 34 years of experience to work for the citizens of Ellis County as their Sheriff. ” Mrs. Rodriguez emphasizes, “My goal is to bring 34 years of expertise to the citizens of Ellis County for the quality law enforcement every taxpayer deserves. Once elected as Sheriff, a greater emphasis will be given to make some much needed improvements for the welfare, safety and protection of every citizen and to speed up Ellis County’s fight on drugs before it is too late.”
