Making Milford History
For the first time in Milford history, two students qualified in regional powerlifting. Alan Singleton and Jaquay Brown competed in the regional powerlifting meet on Saturday, March 10 in Rusk, Texas.
Another historical moment came when Alan Singleton, senior, was awarded the first place medal in the heavy weight division. All three lifts were personal bests for him. He lifted a total of 1475 pounds, 70 pounds more than what he lifted to qualify for the regional meet.
Alan will represent Milford High School at the state powerlifting meet on March 24, in Abilene, Texas at the Taylor County Expo Center.
After a rocky start due to an illegal belt, Jaquay Brown still managed to place sixth at the regional meet. He lifted a total of 660 pounds, a personal best for him, which is 15 pounds more than his total that qualified him for regionals. He is a freshman and competed in the 114 pound weight class.
The top 10 from each division qualify to compete at regionals. From there, only the top two in each weight class competes at the state meet. Powerlifting is not sponsored by the University Interscholastic League (UIL). The Texas High School Powerlifting Association governs the rules and guidelines of the meets. Judges are screened and rules for student safety are of foremost concern. Each region is broken into divisions. Students must qualify in their division in order to compete at the regional meet. Milford competes in Region 3, Division 3.
