School board opts not to pursue class size waiver
The Italy School Board of Trustees voted not to request a class size waiver for the kindergarten and the first grade at a special meeting Monday night following a two-hour executive session.
Upon returning from the closed session, Barry Bassett, superintendent, made the recommendation that the board not pursue the waiver request. He will, instead, advertise for a kindergarten teacher, a first grade teacher, an aide at the high school and an LVN/RN for the district.
The motion passed unanimously with a motion from Mark Stiles and second from Curtis Riddle.
The board also voted to approve the auto/property/liability insurance policy through TASB Risk Management Fund following a lengthy verbal discussion.
There was opposition from Stiles. He had asked Bassett to get other bids for the insurance at a meeting last week but Bassett said he had contacted four companies and all said they could not get a proposal together before the current policy expires.
Stiles said it was “poor management on our part” because bids were not pursued earlier in the year.
“Things like this should be put out for bid,” Stiles said. “TASB is not the know-all, see-all. They’re in business to make money like everybody else is!”
After looking at the policy, Stiles said he wanted a representative from TASB at a meeting to discuss cancellation options and to hire an insurance expert to let the district know how much coverage they need.
The motion passed unanimously with Paul Cockerham making the motion with a second from Jon Mathers.
Prior to adjourning, Bassett introduced Danette Dearing, the new superintendent secretary. He also said the district was awarded 30 I-Pads in a recent grant request. He said they would be divided between both campuses.
