The ‘Citizen of the Month’ for March has lived here his whole life! He loves Italy, loves the people and is right at home in his rocking chair on his front porch waving at all who passes! Yes, I am talking about Joe Tovar.

Joe has worked for Italy ISD in the custodial maintenance department since he was sixteen years old. He was in the CEDA program while he was in school and worked part time. Once he graduated they then hired him on full time and he has been there ever since. “I love my job and the kids. I try to help steer them in the right direction,” explained Tovar.

When asked what he thought about being ‘Citizen of the Month’, Joe replied, “I have lived here all my life and this is the first time to be ‘Citizen of the Month.’ I am very honored.”

Joe has been married for 30 years to Susan Tovar and they have two children, John Paul and Joseph Warren Tovar. To celebrate their 30 years of marriage they will be renewing their vows in Hawaii! Joe said, “I wouldn’t be where I am to day without Susan’s love and support.”

Over the years Joe and Susan have helped a lot of kids “find their way” and five of them lived with them until they graduated high school. “Several of them have graduated from college and I am very proud of them,” explained Tovar.

“I wouldn’t live anywhere else, Italy is my home, it is all I know,” Joe said happily.

Congratulations Joe Tovar – Citizen of the Month
