Italy track star, Kortnei Johnson, is recognized by the Commissioners Court

Waxahachie — Kortnei Johnson continued receiving accolades for her track and field accomplishments at the meeting of the Ellis County Commissioners Court Tuesday afternoon.

Johnson, a sophomore at Italy High School, recently broke the record at the State UIL Track and Field event in Austin in both the 100 meter dash with a time of 11:52 and in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.93.

During the commissioners’ court session, Judge Carol Bush asked Johnson to come to the podium and then changed her request by asking, “Actually, Miss Johnson, could we see you run to the podium?” The room shared a laugh as Johnson and Italy High School AD/HFC Hank Hollywood both reached the podium and stood facing the court as Commissioner Paul Perry read a proclamation saluting Johnson for her record breaking win.

PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, Kortnei Johnson, a sophomore at Italy High School, represented the school district in the 2013 State UIL 1A Track & Field Meet at the Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin on May 11, 2013; and

WHEREAS, she not only won first place but broke the standing girls 100 Meter Dash record of 11.9 seconds by running the race in 11.52 seconds; and

WHEREAS, she captured first place and broke the standing 200 Meter Dash record of 24.34 seconds by running it in 23.94 seconds; and

WHEREAS, she won the 100 Meter Dash, came in second in the 200 Meter Dash and placed fourth in the Long Jump in the 2012 State UIL 2A Track & Field Meet her freshman year in high school; and

WHEREAS, Ellis County expresses its genuine gratitude for the outstanding sportsmanship exhibited during this track and field season; and

WHEREAS, Ellis County is fortunate to be represented by such a fine outstanding citizen and athlete;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Ellis County Commissioners Court does hereby salute Kortnei Johnson of Italy, Texas for bringing recognition and honor to the Italy ISD, the City of Italy and Ellis County with her record-breaking wins at the 2013 State UIL 1A Track & Field Meet.
