On Saturday, June 15th, over 1,000 cyclists converged on our sleepy hamlet for the 28th Annual Tour d’Italia. Lone Star Cyclists hosted the event benefitting Italy High School, Mother’s Against Drunk Driving and other North Texas charities. The weather was as good as it gets and the Lone Star Cyclists once again enjoyed their ride through the countryside.

With the ride beginning at 8:00 am, the cyclists chose between 12 to 63 mile routes which is appealing to the whole family. Zane Codel, age 7, was a first time Tour d’Italia rider and chose the 12 mile route. His mom, Elizabeth Kooy, both from Dallas, said, “We are entering all the European rides, Tour d’Italia, Norway ride in Clifton and Paris has a ride too. We have already ridden in the Make A Wish ride in McKinney. We have also decided to ride in the Hotter than Hell Hundred held in Wichita Falls in August. We will ride 25 miles or go 10K.” Zane enjoyed the snow cone stand afterward.

Mayor James Hobbs was excited about the ride and sat down with director, Pat McGennis, to discuss potential plans for next year. He suggested this would be a great opportunity for Italy merchants and maybe utilize other associations, such as the Lions Club or Italy High School clubs considering fundraising.
