Obituary: Loyd Vanlandingham Towery, 1934 – 2013

Mrs. Loyd V. Towery, widow of Alfred Glen Towery, died October 18, 2013 of congestive heart failure.

Loyd was born April 15, 1934, the daughter of Fredna Cross and Raymond Vanlandingham and was a life-long resident of Italy, Texas. She was the great-granddaughter of Edward H. Loyd and Georgia Couch, early residents of Italy. She was also the great-great-granddaughter of Eliza Sims, mother of Samuel Meriwether Dunlap, for whom the Dunlap Library in Italy is named. Eliza’s fourth husband was Nicholas P. Sims who with Eliza’s son Ellis County Judge Oscar Dunlap established the Nicholas P. Sims Library in Waxahachie.

Loyd married A. Glen Towery in July 1953 and they were together until his death in 2006. She is survived by two step-children, Ann T. Black of Dallas and Ronald Towery, as well as several cousins. She was buried with her husband in West Mountain Cemetery, Upshur County, Texas.
