Relay for Life: Twenty-five years of hope
Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Red Oak Municipal Center the fight was on. What fight, you may ask? The fight against cancer. There were 20 to 25 ladies and two men discussing strategies on how to wage war on cancer.
The Central Ellis County Relay for Life walk this year will take place on May 15 at the Waxahachie High School. Last year $416,000 was raised by Ellis County Relay For Life teams for American Cancer Society. This year they will try to “blow that amount out of the water.” Nancy Edwards, team chair for Central Ellis County Relay said, “The reason we do Relay for Life is to raise money to fight against cancer, we have fun, but our goal is to raise money.”
The theme for this year’s walk is dedicated to the year of 1985. Relay for Life began in 1985 and is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary.
Wednesday, October 29 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. the YMCA in Waxahachie will be hosting “Trunk or Treat”. Relay For Life team members will be there promoting Relay for Life.
The “Traveling Trophy” is awarded to the Relay for Life team that raises the most money for the month. The winner of the trophy keeps the trophy for one whole month. The trophy is then returned and given to the team that raises the most money for the next month. The Italy Relay for Life team turned in $500 this month and were the proud recipients of the trophy. The members of the Italy team are: Jenna Chambers (team co-captain), Kasey Montgomery (co-captain), Cindy Sutherland, Karen Mathiowetz, Kelly Svehlak, Renee Finley, Anne Sutherland, Wendy Frank, Ladon Durham and Larry Byrne.
The Italy Relay for Life team is selling “Cooking for a Cure” cookbooks. The books are priced at $20 and can be purchased from any one of the Italy Relay for Life members.
