Our brains are overstimulated with thoughts, making it difficult to wind down at the end of the day. Zina Guthrie has supported the American Cancer Society through Relay for Life for several years with donations. She is employed by First State Bank of Rice in Italy, so when the bank decided to create a team for the Ennis Relay, she did not hesitate to join.

The race will begin and end at the high school—300 S. College Street, Italy. Race start time is 8:00 a.m. for runners and a few minutes after that for walkers. Check in time begins at 6:00 a.m.

Eight-hundred sixty pounds of expired and unused medications collected

Ellis County citizens participated in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Event on Saturday, April 30, 2016. After cleaning out their medicine cabinets of expired and unused Prescription and Over-the-Counter medications, and dropping them off at one of the Prescription Drug Take Back Locations around the county for an environmentally safe and proper disposal.

Local Law Enforcement to Collect Unused Prescription Drugs

Ellis County, Texas – Local law enforcement will host a Prescription Drug Take Back on April 30, 2016. Officers will be collecting unused and expired prescription and over-the-counter medications for appropriate disposal between the hours of 10:00 am and 2:00 pm.

Teen dating violence is similar to and can be as lethal as adult relationship violence. Approximately one in three girls is a victim of abuse from a dating partner. It includes hitting, yelling, threatening, name calling and other forms of verbal, sexual, emotional and physical abuse. These facts make it very important for parents to be aware of relationship abuse.

FirstLook changes lives one at a time

The Annual Life Investors’ Celebration for FirstLook Pregnancy Clinic was held on February 29, 2016 at the Waxahachie Civic Center. The night was filled with hope, laughter and tears. This year’s theme, “Keep Calm and Carry On”, is the in-house theme at the Clinic. It was first used in 1939 by the British government on motivational posters in preparation for WWII. It intended to raise the morale of the British public.

Location Change for Relay For Life of Central Ellis County

Due to the recent rains and the rainy forecast for this Saturday, May 30th, The Relay For Life of Central Ellis County location has changed. Instead of holding the event at the Waxahachie Sports Complex, the event will be held at Robbie E. Howard Eighth Grade Center, 265 Broadhead Road in Waxahachie on May 30, 2015.

Battling Cancer the Crownover Way – Faith, Family and Friends

Dale Crownover has been thankful all his life for the relationship he had with his parents. Roy and Bernyce Crownover were wonderful parents. They taught him to work hard, be honest and rely on his faith during adverse times. The Crownovers also taught him to give back, be humble and never take anything for granted.

When Denell Flores was growing up, she had dreams of becoming a nurse and mother when she was older. She struggled academically in grade school so she was not encouraged to pursue a higher education. She fulfilled one her dreams when she became a mommy, but thought the other dream was just that – a dream.

Relay For Life – Survivor Leola Burks

Image: Leola Burks never let  cancer define who she was. When diagnosed she decided to fight harder than she had ever fought in her life.

When Leola Burks was diagnosed with Stage 3 lung cancer in 2006, she had a big decision to make. She could either give up and let it defeat her or fight harder than she had ever fought in her life to defeat it. She chose to do whatever it took to survive. She also decided it would not change her outlook on life no matter what.

In 2012, Juana Liggit retired from work. She loves making crafts, gardening and playing golf, so she looked forward to staying active and enjoying life with her family and friends. Her husband, James, loves to play golf and has taught it for many years. He retired from the Air Force and owns a small recruiting company that helps place veterans with companies in the oil and gas fields.

In January of 2009, Charlotte James’s life was forever changed. That was the month that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. That was the month she decided to fight cancer with every ounce of her being. She was determined to do whatever it took to beat cancer. She wanted to live – she did not want to be another statistic.

National Alzheimer’s Awareness month

November is National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. It is a time designated for reflection, receiving information and the importance of finding breakthroughs. This national awareness month was appointed 25 years ago and research has come far since then but still has a mountain to climb.

Cooking for a Cure cookbooks are back for a limited time. They are available at the Plaid Donkey in Waxahachie and the Magic Mirror in Italy. The price is $20 and proceeds will benefit Relay For Life Central Ellis County.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. A reminder that each woman needs to self-examine or take a trip to the doctor for a yearly checkup. “Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women. The five-year survival rate for breast cancer, when caught early before it spreads beyond the breast, is now 98% (compare to 74% in 1982).” These are a few facts about breast cancer from the Susan G.
