IYAA performs well in 2nd week action

Game 1 – Old Italy Gym

The 1st game featured Italy 13 (Girls 3rd, 4th) coached by Elizabeth Evans vs Hillsboro Hot Pink. Italy, led by #1 Quintora Washington and #15 Jasmine Hernandez (3-points each), had an 8-5 lead at halftime. Hillsboro managed to close the gap before the final period, but Italy 13 still had 9-8 lead at the end of the 3rd. Italy 13 put the only 2-points in the last period, however, and held on for an exciting 11-8 victory.

Game 2
Italy 14 (Girls 3rd, 4th) coached by Tina Haight battled Hillsboro Pink. The game was tied at the half 8-8. #10 Emmy tried to keep the winning streak alive for Italy 14 by making 5-points. Unfortunately, Hillsboro Pink outscored Italy 14 by 4-points in the 2nd half to hand Coach Haight’s squad it’s first loss of the season. 15-11.

Game 3
Italy 18 (Boys 3rd, 4th) coached by Jordan Hugghins (member of the 1997 Italy All-State Basketball Team) took on Hillsboro Blue in a high scoring matchup. Trailing 18-7 at the break, Italy 18 put in 19-points in the 2nd half but couldn’t slow down H. Blue’s #7 Bamion (18-points). Italy led by #13 David (9-points) lost the game 34-26.

Game 4
Italy 19 Girls (Boys 3rd, 4th) coached by Misty Escamilla challenged Hillsboro Maroon in their 2nd game of the season. A well-rounded Italy 19 squad led by duel scoring machines #2 James M. (8-points) and #3 James Walton (5-points) both led the way. #24 Tylan Wallace and #5 Gary “GScot” Escamilla each added 4-points to help Italy 19 win the game against Hillsboro Black, in a close one, 28-27.

Hillsboro Games – As reported

Game 1
Italy 23 Girls (5th, 6th) coached by Barry Byers went head-up against Hillsboro Red to get the day started. Tara Wallis (21-points) had to be reined in by Coach Byers who limited her to passing duties only in the 2nd half. Power Forward Madison Washington put in 18-points as a result. Jaclynn “Big Shot” Lewis (11-points) controlled the paint. Also scoring were #4 McKenzie Davis (3-points) and #5 Jennifer McDaniel (1-point) as Italy 23 wins its 2nd straight 54-17.

Game 2
Italy 29 (Girls 5th, 6th) coached by Michelle Walton were ambushed by Hillsboro Black who used fullcourt pressure to slowdown the Italy 29 offensive attack. Hillsboro won by a small margin making both squads records 1-1.

Game 3
After a big win last week, Italy 29 Boys (5th, 6th) coached by Shedrick Walker seemed sluggish as they lose to Hillsboro 26 giving Italy 29 a 1-1 record.

Game 4
Italy 27 (5th, 6th) coached by Andrea Windham defeated Hillsboro 25. Italy 27, led by hustling guard Ty Windham and Ryan “The Threat” Connor, to win a close one 22-16.

All the Italy squads will play again next Saturday, some games will be in Italy and others in Hillsboro. Check with coaches for copies of season schedules and practice times.
