Lady Gladiators go 5 and 1 at Waxahachie Tournament
The Lady Gladiators made their presence known at The Classic of Ellis County softball tournament this past weekend. This tournament, sponsored by the Ellis County Umpires Association, had a total of 14 teams from all over Texas participate.
In this round-robin tournament the Lady Gladiators played games against Alvarado (3A), Venus (3A), Covington (District Opponent), Buffalo (2A), Blooming Grove (2A) and Dallas Life (2A). Reigning victorious over all teams but Buffalo, the Lady Gladiators are on a roll as their pre-season continues.
This weekend marked the start of Freshman pitcher, Megan Richards’ high school softball career. Her first two batters were strike-outs. Definitely a sign of things to come with “Rich” on the mound. Megan ended up with 29 K’s for the weekend and only gave up 6 hits in the 18 innings that she pitched. Courtney Westbrook (Junior pitcher) had outstanding stats as well with 32 K’s in 17 innings. Pitching for the Lady Gladiators is solid and will make for a very fun, and shows promise for a very long, softball season.
Head Coach, Jennifer Reeves said “I was very pleased with the girls this weekend. Offensively I thought we did great. The girls were smart on the bases and at the plate which helped us generate a lot of runs. Our pitchers threw the ball really well this weekend which says a lot because it was cold and windy. I think the girls are playing great and I think the rest of the season is going to be very exciting.”
On a sad note lone Senior, Angelica Garza, broke her leg on a slide into 3rd base during Friday night’s game against Covington. “Jelly”, the starting center fielder, will not only be missed both offensively and defensively but also as a team leader.
The Lady Gladiators are scheduled to play Rice this Friday night at home (5:30pm). Be There!
Noteable stats for the weekend:
- Freshman Pitcher, Megan Richards had a 3 game era of .39
- Junior, Abby Griffith had a .400 batting average
- Courtney Westbrook & Alma Suaste both batted a .286
- Cori Jeffords batted a .267
- Julia McDaniel & Cori Jeffords both hit triples
Way to go Ladies!!!!!
