Johnny Hanes of Mertens retired at the end of April with 20 years of service to Ellis County.

Hanes began working for Pct. 3 in April of 1989. He said he was hired by Commissioner Del McLane.

“They hired me to be a bridge builder because I was a welder,” Hanes said. “Through the years I was willing to learn everything they could teach me from driving a truck to running heavy equipment.”

Hanes said he and his wife, Carlene, plan to travel and visit the grandkids. He plans to continue collecting scrap iron and do various welding jobs.

“I enjoyed working with all the commissioners and co-workers.” He added, “The last five years have been the best.”

A retirement luncheon was held April 29 honoring Hanes. Commissioner Heath Sims presented him with a plaque thanking Hanes for his dedication and service to the precinct.
