Upcoming Historical Marker dedication at Bethel United Methodist Church

Next Sunday, April 15th at 3:00 p.m. there will be an Official Texas Historical Marker dedication at the Bethel United Methodist Church in the Community Hall for THE SIMS FAMILY OF ELLIS COUNTY. The actual historical marker will stand next the Shawnee Cattle Trail marker on Pecan Springs Ranch on L.R. Campbell Rd. See the attached for more information.

Local family sues City of Italy

A lawsuit was filed on November 9, 2017 by Shelley and Randy Huskins in the 443rd District Court of Ellis County against the City of Italy. The lawsuit alleges the damages and injuries suffered by their family were the direct and proximate result of the negligence, deliberate indifference, gross negligence and callous disregard of them.

The future of Italy’s First Christian Church

In 2003, the members of First Christian Church in Italy dealt with the reality their congregation was so small they could no longer worship together and maintain the building. They approached the City of Italy with an offer to donate the historic building to the city for a museum. The city agreed and took possession of the church.

I have received multiple inquiries concerning whether cameras will be allowed inside the courtroom for the proceeding. I have confirmed with the Court that NO cameras will be allowed inside the courtroom or in the vestibule area right outside the courtroom doors. Cameras can be in the hallway area or at the building but not inside the Court. The hearing is open to the public.

A Christmas Celebration to remember

On Saturday, December 9, 2017, the Italy community came together to celebrate the Christmas season. Despite the cold, crisp weather, everyone had smiles on their faces. People visited with each other. Children played. Vendors prepared for what they hoped would be a great day.

Italy’s Annual Main Street Market and Community Wide Garage Sale—October 7, 2017

Its that time again as plans are underway for the 2017 Italy Main Street Market & Community Wide Garage Sale. The date has been set for Saturday, October 7, 2017. The focal point of this event will be an opportunity for community members in and around Italy (including Avalon, Forreston & Milford) to set up mini-garage sale booths in Italy’s downtown Pavilion as well as Italy citizens having garage sales at their home. It will be a great opportunity for everyone to clean out a closet or two as well as finding your next piece for that DIY Pinterest project you have been wanting to do.

Italy Food Pantry receives large donation from Brookshire Brothers

The Italy Food Pantry was delighted to receive 750 lbs of canned vegetables and soup from Brookshire Bros last month. Mike Nicholson, Store Manager, was very pleased that corporate shared its resources with our community, and hopes it will continue. Susan Wooten, Food Pantry Director thanked Brookshire Bros. for its generosity, and noted that holiday supplies are appreciated now more than ever.

The Shawnee Cattle Trail Historical Marker Dedication

The dedication of the Texas Historical Marker for the Shawnee Cattle Trail was held on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at the Pecan Springs Ranch. The ranch is located on L.R. Campbell Road outside of Italy and is owned by Ted and Nancy Paup, sixth generation Texans.

Texas Baptist Men volunteers help local church

Central Baptist Church is building a new Family Life Center on the corner of South Ward Street and Travis Street in Italy. The Texas Baptist Men (TBM) Retiree Builders came to town and stayed two weeks to help with the project. An army of men and their wives in 19 campers rolled into town to begin the work. Some of the volunteers commuted daily to help. There were at least 25 builders not including their wives here each day. Several Central members worked along side the volunteers each day.

BHB Feed Supply Grand Opening Saturday, April 9th

BHB Feed and Supply is having their Grand Opening on Saturday, April 9th, from 11am to 1 pm. There will be BBQ provided along with music, facepainting, vendor tables, drawings, and a bounce house. It will be a great time for family fun.

Saying Goodbye to the Uptown Cafe

When Doris Mitchell started working for Oma’s Jiffy Burger in Waxahachie many years ago, she had no idea that she would be grilling burgers and feeding people for 32 more years. But that is exactly what happened. Doris is the owner of the Uptown Café in downtown Italy and will serve her customers for the last time on September 12, 2015. The building she rented has sold so she is closing her doors that day.

Barry Byers’ camera is gone…

Not too long ago the entire community banded together to help purchase a camera for Barry Byers. A BBQ dinner was served at the infamously famous Uptown Cafe and all monies raised at that dinner went to purchase a quality camera for Barry. A little over a week ago this camera was stolen from Barry’s truck.

George Scott Scholarship fundraiser

The 22nd Annual George E. Scott Memorial Scholarship Dinner was held last Friday night before the Homecoming football game in the school cafeteria. The catered meal by Bubba’s Barbecue of Ennis featured brisket, sausage, potato salad, beans, bread and tea.

The Baptist Won!

Everyone knew the outcome of the game before it started. They knew the Baptist would win because they were the only ones playing. On Sunday evening, the members of First Baptist Church and Central Baptist Church met at the Johnny Jones Field to fellowship with each other and play a little softball. Members of all ages took the field to challenge each other on the field.

Lone Star Cyclists host 29th year of Tour d’Italia bike ride centered in Italy

Image: City of Italy’s mayor, James Hobbs, welcomes a cyclist from Tyler to our fair city for the 29th Annual 2014 Tour d’Italia Bicycle race that set an event record with 1,175 cyclists participating from around the country.

With the tire pressure checked, the chains well oiled and the water bottles filled, 1,175 Tour d’Italia bike riders set a new participation record this past Saturday while touring parts of Ellis, Hill and Navarro Counties. Hosted by Lone Star Cylclists, club president, David Shuford, was presented a golden key to the City of Italy by Mayor James Hobbs.

Good Morning Texas, Channel 8 visiting Italy June 27th

They are doing a series on Texas Cities with European names and Italy was chosen to participate. Page was out here on June 2nd and took some shots of City Hall, the Fire Station, Corley Bell Tower, the Blacksmith shop behind City Hall and also Uptown Café. Everyone come out to the Cargill Gallman Pavilion on the 27th @ 8:00 am and show your support for Italy, The Biggest Little Town in Texas.

Cemetery clean up day planned

The Italy Cemetery Association is asking for the community to help clean up the cemetery. A work day is planned for Saturday, June 7th. Volunteers are needed with chain saws and weed eaters.

Brotherhood Ride

The Brotherhood Ride is comprised of firefighters, emergency medical personnel and law enforcement officers. They ride bicycles each year to honor first responders who died in the line of duty. They ride to show communities, families, friends and coworkers that the heroes will not be forgotten. This year they are riding 9 days to honor the 19 firefighters that lost their lives in the line of duty last year.

Pedestrian fatally struck by vehicle on I-35E

On Monday, March 10th at around 5:15pm, an Italy Police Officer working a traffic detail on I-35E was notified of a pedestrian vs. automobile accident in the northbound lanes of I-35E near mile marker 386 (just prior to the HWY 34 exit ramp).

It’s finally beginning to look a lot like Christmas after Saturday’s Christmas parade and festival! The biting cold did not deter many, as folks gathered to enjoy the parade, entertainment, raffle and tasty treats.

Power lines down, heavy traffic backed up thru town

An 18 wheeler carrying a over-sized load ripped down a power line that crosses Hwy 34 in front of Davids Supermarket. Traffic is being diverted around the area. If traveling on Hwy 34 expect delays and detours. It is advised to stay away from the area.

The Rockett Ranch Café and Club in Milford held its first annual barbeque cook off last Saturday, Oct. 5. The turnout was less than expected. Speculation suggested the rain prediction could have been the reason or the 60% payout for prize money. It was decided next year would deliver an 80% payout and pray for better weather.

Community fun at Italy’s National Night Out

National Night Out downtown Italy at the Pavilion Tuesday night was quite the success! There were over 200 people there eating hotdogs, line dancing, visiting and just having a great time. Mayor Hobbs was even spotted dancing in the line dance!
