Door to door salesman in Italy

It has been reported that there is door to door salesman in Italy that is selling children’s computer software. Part of the sales pitch is that the software has been approved by the Italy ISD. This is not true. The software has no affiliation with the school district. Please be aware of that fact.

The Italy Police Department responds to a ‘multiple shots fired’ call disturbance near Harris Street in Italy. Around midnight during a 4th of July celebration, a large crowd between 100 to 200 citizens, predominantly Italy and Milford citizens, engaged in hostile activity and had to be dispersed with help from DPS troopers and the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department. On Monday, authorities responded to flare ups in both Italy and Milford.

James and Joyce Hobbs have only been living in Italy for a little over five and a half months but have made quite an impact on the city of Italy. So much so they were awarded Citizen of the Month for June.

The Beekeeper

Bees are necessary to our Eco system and human survival. Ehow.com says, “According to the Great Plains Nature Center, honey bees perform an estimated ten billion dollars worth of work for humans by pollinating one-fourth of the plants that produce fruit for humans to eat.” Backyardbeekeepers.com says “Agriculture depends greatly on the honeybee for pollination. Honeybees account for 80% of all insect pollination.

Tour d’ Italia circles the countryside

Approximately 1300 bicyclists, young and old, converged upon Italy High School and rode the 25th Annual Tour d’ Italia bicycle event on Saturday. This cycling event happens every year in Italy and the cyclists enjoy the countryside and the warm welcome from Italy residents.

Living Memorial dedication for IHS graduate planned for May 24th

On Monday, May 24th a tree will be dedicated to the memory of Shelley Nance, a 2007 IHS graduate. Due to her untimely death in the fall of 2009, Shelley’s classmates, college friends, and family will come together on May 24th at 11:00 am to dedicate a tree at the IHS campus. The public is encouraged to attend.

Vaccination Clinic on Saturday

From 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Saturday, April 24, the Brookside Veterinarian Clinic will host the annual vaccinations for area animals at the local water barn located at 413 Clark. Also, the city will register all cats and dogs at $12 each.

Italy exits Ellis County Youth Expo with a trough full of ribbons

Members of the Italy FFA, the Ellis County 4-H and the FCCLA entered their lambs, goats, heifers, steers, hogs, desserts, shirts, photos and drawings into the Ellis County Youth Expo Show & Sale with high expectations. By the end of the week long event, expectations were met as Italy’s hard working students left with a trough full off ribbons and even a Grand Champion Buckle to boot!

Beautiful is the snow covered land

The snow has really changed things around here. When you turn a corner, Italy appears to be a picture postcard or a living Christmas card. The white snow makes our city take on a new ambiance and a new, clean atmosphere. The snowfall is rare in this area but certainly most welcomed.

Local restaurant announces new DWI education program in Avalon

The, JUST! Alcohol and Drug Education Program, is a new state approved and mandated DWI Program here in Ellis County, that will provide DWI classes certified by the Texas Department of State Health Services. This class is a requirement in Texas for any person convicted of a first offense DWI.

Santa Claus Comes to Town by Fire Engine

Around 7:30 Thursday evening Santa Claus could be seen coming into Milford riding on a fire engine. There were lots and lots of children waving and yelling hello to Santa Claus. They couldn’t wait to sit on his lap and tell them what they wanted for Christmas.

The Italy Police Department served as backup to the Texas DPS Highway Patrol during an undercover drug bust when a commercial bus was pulled over near the Tiger Mart off of Hwy. 35 in Italy on Friday, October 30.

Couch Street Bridge closed 3-6 months

Image: Sorry for the delays — What commuters driving into Italy have met with as they exit Hwy. 77 onto Couch Street. A bit of a hassle now, but a smoother safer bridge will be worth the wait.

Couch Street Bridge is being upgraded for the better but estimated completion of the project may take 3 to 6 months. Foul weather and hard rock have slowed the demolition project but a smoother driving surface and a wider bridge will prove it to be worth the wait.

Italy Donut Shop Closed

Saturday October 31st was the last day of business for the Italy Donut Shop. Owner Jae Chang Bae will be renting this building to Keng Chen who will be opening a donut shop and a chinese buffet.

Lightning strikes cause power outage at Stafford Elementary

During today’s storms, a bolt of lighting struck one of the electrical transformers that supplies power to the elementary school in Italy. The Italy Fire Department responded to make sure that there was no immediate danger. Oncor responded quickly and the power was back on within a couple of hours.

If you are looking for a place to care for your children during the day this will give you the opportunity to chat with Patricia Burke (owner), a few teachers, tour the school and pick up an enrollment packet.

One dome, two domes, three domes, four. The National Monolithic Dome Tour is slated for Saturday, October 24 from 10am-4pm. There are a host of Monolithic Domes open across the United States and the ones in Italy are included as well.

Italy’s National Night out was held Tuesday night at the George Scott gymnasium at the Italy High School. It was postponed from last Tuesday because of rain. There still was rain but it didn’t stop the fun.

Even predictions of rain could not stop the citizens of Milford from coming out and supporting the Milford Police Department and the City of Milford on Tuesday night – National Night Out. They even set a record, approximately three hundred fifty Milford folks showed up to be a part of the festivities and show their support.

Reward offered in vandalism case

If anyone knows who vandalized 320 Dale Evans, Italy, Texas (home of Tina Haight) on Saturday, October 3, please contact the Italy Police Department. There is a $10,000 reward being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime.

Grand Opening of Miss Millie’s

When I walked into Miss Millie’s Restaurant and Music Hall Saturday evening I was met with wonderful aromas emanating from the kitchen and familiar tunes from the band, Final Showdown. Everywhere you looked the tables were full with customers and delicious dishes of Mexican and American cuisine.

Italy Man Arrested For Terrorism

Thursday afternoon, Hosam Maher Husein Smadi, a 19 year old Jordanian, living and working in Italy, was arrested by the FBI for allegedly attempting to bomb The Fountain Place, a glass skyscraper with 60 floors, one of the tallest buildings in downtown Dallas.

Karson Holley – Italy’s Citizen of the Month

Eight year old Karson Holley had a great summer. Part of what made her summer great was the opportunity she had to deliver Meals on Wheels on Wednesdays with her grandmother, Francis Holley (Gran). Because of her dedication to helping the elderly, Karson was selected as this month’s Citizen of the Month.

On September 11, the local firefighters, city employees, police, Murrie Wainscott and Mayor Jackson gathered and remembered the fallen of the twin towers. This is the 8th anniversary of the tragedy.

‘Big Rig’ stuck in the mud

Last evening during the blinding rain storm Logistics Inc.’s big rig took the turn too wide on exit 386 and went off into the muddy ground. Consequently being stuck in the mud all evening. At approximately 10:00 a.m. this morning a wrecking company out of Fort Worth came and began to pull the semi out of the mud.

Milford’s Music Festival – A Success!

Around 12:15 in the afternoon I arrived at Miss Millie’s Restaurant and Music Hall and was delighted with what I saw. There was a huge stage all lit up with wonderful music wafting through the air as one of the bands were warming up for a performance.

Italy PD makes another bust

Yesterday, July 28, 2009 at approximately 4:30 p.m., officers of the Italy Police Department, Ellis County Narcotics Task Force and Ellis County Sheriff’s Office served a narcotics search warrant at 209 Couch Avenue, Italy, Texas.

George Scott Memorial Park Grand Opening

The George Scott Memorial Park was really “swinging” Monday evening. It was the grand opening of the new city park. Children were seen everywhere swinging on swings, jumping on spring toys and sliding down bright yellow slides. The park is a wonderful addition to our town and everyone was having a good time.

Milford Music Festival Booths – Still Available

The Greater Milford 1st Annual Texas Music Festival is August 22, 2009. All kinds of fun will be had on this day. There will be lots of good music to be heard by Billy Joe Shaver, Dallahachie Boys, Tucker Peterson, the Shane Howard Band, Ryan Roberts, the Gordon Collier Band, Whiskey Hill, Spivey Crossing and Billy Ewing.

A Sea of Orange

When I drove up to the park today all I saw was a sea of orange! Twenty employees from the Waxahachie Home Depot, all dressed in orange t-shirts, were putting together equipment, digging holes, spreading gravel, and doing everything possible to get the park ready for it’s grand opening on Monday, July 20th.

Eighteen Wheeler Flipped on I-35E

Around 4:00 AM this morning an eighteen wheeler carrying produce flipped over on I-35E north bound near Chambers Creek. The driver, Amelio Rivas said," I got a little distracted and ran off the road, couldn’t get the truck back on the road and flipped the truck. I am fine, I did not get hurt."

Bob Davis, who helps work the land and livestock for the Harper Cattle Company, LLC Ranch in Waxahachie, had his 4th of July start unexpectantly while standing on his front porch. Davis saw what seemed to be an airplane loosing altitude and crashing down into a pasture full of cattle across from his house.

New marquee welcomes visitors to Italy

“Welcome To Italy,” is the headline across the top of the new marquee sign installed this morning at the corner of Hwy. 77 and Hwy. 34. Travelers from all four directions will be able to view the sign that will highlight current events within the City of Italy.
