Saturday morning at the S.M. Dunlap Library in Italy about 9:00 a.m. you could see so many smiles and hear so much laughter coming from all of the children waiting to hunt eggs. The eggs were everywhere. There were so many eggs that some of the children’s baskets were over flowing.

Letter to the Editor: 4th Annual Lions Club BBQ Cook-off a success

The Italy Lions Club wishes to thank Lonestar BBQ Society for their support in our 4th Annual BBQ Cook-off. The cookers came from local and as far as Oklahoma, Abilene and Austin to name a few locations. The cookers were very generous with their donations and awesome BBQ. This year we had 50 cookers and that made it a qualifier for the Invitational Cook-offs later in the year.

It was very, very cold the night of Dianne Jaynes fundraiser. But the citizens of the small community of Italy, Texas was not going to let a little bad weather bother them and as usual came out in full to support one of their own, Dianne Jaynes and her family.

Flying Dollar Ranch’s World Championship Win

Flying Dollar Ranch brought home a World Championship and two Reserve World Championships to Italy last weekend after competing at the Gypsy Horse Registry of America’s World Championship Show held January 27-29 at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo.

Christmas Lights Contest Winners

No one can say that Italy does not have the Christmas Spirit. Everywhere you go in Italy you can see Christmas lights galore. Santa Clauses, snowmen, lolly pops, nativity scenes, Christmas trees and candy canes can be seen scattered throughout the town.

Italy Hosts Christmas Parade and Festival

It may have been a little cold and wet on Saturday, but that did not stop the parade from barreling down Main Street of Italy Texas. There were elves, floats and even a special visit from a jolly old friend from the North Pole.

Double dose of bad luck

Cedric Overton, Italy resident, was at the wrong place at the wrong time early this morning. Apparently, the victim of a random shooting, Cedric ran into a Dallas convenience store and suffered three gunshots, one to the back and two to the arm. One bullet shattered his elbow. Luckily, others passed through the body and missed any vital organs. Overton was rushed to Charlton Methodist Hospital where he was taken to surgery to rebuild his elbow.

Welcome the faithful under one roof

Christmas hymns and beautiful faces graced Central Baptist Church on Sunday evening as Italy Ministerial Alliance hosted the annual Christmas Service. The weather was a little sloppy and cold but that did not stop the faithful from coming.

This past weekend the Flying Dollar Ranch held a Halloween Horse Show.  It is a yearly event and the participants are urged to wear costumes.  In addition to the costume fun there are several other fun events that the participants competed in.  From the look of the pictures it was a good time for these equestrians.

National Dome Tour October 15, 2011

Italy National Night Out

Italy’s National Night Out Event was held on Tuesday, October 4th. And this year Italy went all out. They had free hot dogs for everyone, games, a bounce house and even a band.

There were lots and lots of people, booths, a band, a dunking booth and fun galore at Milford’s National Night Out celebration Tuesday evening.

I-35 Manhunt near Italy

On Monday, October 3rd, 2011 a little after 8:00pm, the Italy Police Department assisted the Texas Department of Public Safety after they were in a vehicle pursuit on I-35E and crashed the vehicle near Chambers Road and I-35E just north of Italy. The occupants ran on foot from the vehicle. The Italy Police Department assisted by setting up a perimeter along the northern border of Italy while the Ellis County SO and DPS searched the ground. None of the occupants of the vehicle were found during the search. Guns and narcotics were found in the vehicle left behind by the suspects.

4-H’ers from around Texas came together in Waxahachie on Saturday, September 17, at the Ellis County Sportsman’s Club to compete in the Ellis County Shooting Sports 4-H Club Fun Shoot. Participants in the shotgun fundraiser event competed in 100 rounds of skeet and trap as well as fun games such as “Snipe” and “Wolf Chase.”

The compassion of strangers comes to Italy

If you drive to the corner of Clark and Harris Streets, you might be pleasantly surprised. There is a building being erected that appeared out of nowhere. One day it was an empty slab and the next day it was the beginning of a new church. On Monday morning, strangers moved into town to give Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church an awesome present.

Local business man heads to Joplin

On May 22, 2011, the citizens of Joplin, Missouri experienced the change of a lifetime. A tornado with up to and beyond 200 miles an hour winds devastated 1/3 of their fair city. The devastation included a local nursing home, a hospital and approximately 7000 homes and businesses, losing 155 lives according to the Joplin Globe, June 21, 2011.

1st Annual Summerfest in Italy

On Saturday, Italy hosted the 1st Annual Summerfest that included a snow cone vendor, as well as wonderful smoked BBQ. Turkey legs, sausage-on-a-stick and sandwiches were included on the Summerfest menu—all that and a bag of chips.

Megann Lewis and Andrew Harlow were married on Saturday, May 21, 2011.  It was a sight to behold and the crowd went away with song in their heart and happy memories of a beautiful wedding.

Demolition of Italy Community Center marks end of an era

Italy, Texas – 06/10/11: Whether you know it as the American Legion Hall, or the Cargill-Gallman Community Center and Museum, or the Italy Community Center, one of the central focal points of downtown Italy has overseen its last parade, hosted its last community event and will be casting its final shadows as demolition of the structure began early this morning.

Fund Raiser Opportunity at the Tour d’Italia

Calling all church groups, riding clubs and scouting organizations!  Are you looking for a good fund raising activity?  Well if so, I’d like to invite you to plan a bake sale and come sell your homemade pies, cakes, cookies and brownies to over 1,000 hungry cyclist participating in the 26th Annual Tour d’Italia on Saturday, June 18th.  Simply bring your tables, wrap up all your yummy baked goods and set up outside at the High School by 9:00 am and then watch those funds add up.

Local Library Hosts Egg Hunt

Dunlap Library held its 28th annual Easter Egg hunt on Saturday, April 23. Children up to age 10 were allowed to hunt for candy filled and prize filled eggs.

Milford businesses destroyed by fire

The Milford Cash Grocery building was gutted by fire Tuesday night. However, thanks to the exhaustive efforts of local firefighters, adjacent structures were spared and no one was injured.

Mayors for Meals

March is a fun time for the recipients of Meals on Wheels, they get to have their meals delivered to them by the Mayor or City Administrator of their town. This year March 24th was the day Terri Murdoch (city administrator) helped deliver meals. Needless to say, there is a lot of handshaking going on as each meal is delivered.

Citizens of the Month – Tommy and Anne Sutherland

Tommy and Anne Sutherland could not have been more surprised when they came home and found the “Citizen of the Month” sign in their yard. Anne explained, “We were both so surprised but we feel very special that we were chosen. It means a lot.”

Chuck Johnson carries a cross

Wednesday, a man was seen carrying a big wooden cross around our little town of Italy. He sported a rhinestone studded cowboy hat and looked to be quite a character. His name is Chuck Johnson and he carries a big cross around America to remind folks about Jesus.

Italy Appreciation Day at the DQ

Wednesday at 11:00 AM, KBEC radio was broadcasting live from the Italy Dairy Queen for Italy Appreciation Day. Lots of customers were there, even Mayor Jackson joined in on the celebration.
