An expected 1200 cyclists were planned for at the Tour d’Italia on Saturday. As the Lone Star Cyclists Club pooled their efforts, the riders were happy to be back in Italy, Texas again-no matter how hot or windy it was.

The 26th Annual Tour d’Italia took place on Saturday, June 18. The ride began at Italy High School at 8:00 am and went beyond the city into the country side.

Cyclists could choose up to 62 miles from assorted levels and paces and that included the 12 mile ride as well. Each rider was able to stop at different refreshment stations throughout the area, including Frost, Dresden and Blooming Grove.

“The best thing we offer are the ice cold plums and nectarines,” Bobbie Carrol, Registrar, proudly stated. “We have some riders that have returned for 20 years,” she said. Chris McGough, Director of the 26th annual event, said, “We have 530 cyclists pre-registered, which is up 10-15% than last year. Proceeds will benefit Italy High School with scholarships, women’s abuse center, MADD and the North Texas Food Bank.” McGough also mentioned he appreciated the Ellis County Amateur Radio Club, “They are the eyes and ears of Lone Star.”

When the ride was over, the cyclists enjoyed a free snow cone and ahh wonderful shower at the school. For more details about the Lone Star Cyclists, go to their website.
