Pedestrian fatally struck by vehicle on I-35E

On Monday, March 10th at around 5:15pm, an Italy Police Officer working a traffic detail on I-35E was notified of a pedestrian vs. automobile accident in the northbound lanes of I-35E near mile marker 386 (just prior to the HWY 34 exit ramp).

Officers arrived on scene and found the pedestrian, Jonathan Michael Dehoyos, 22 yoa, from San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Dehoyos was part of a work team that is employed by a company out of San Antonio who subcontracts with the Texas Department of Transportation to pick up trash and debris along Interstate corridors.

A witness, who also works for the company and was following another work truck, stated Mr. Dehoyos was struck by the other work truck as it was backing up. The driver of the work truck that struck Mr. Dehoyos was identified at the scene as Brandon Cortez, 22 yoa, also from San Antonio, Texas.

Judge Jackie Miller of Ellis County Precinct 2 was notified and responded to the scene. An ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Italy Police Department. No charges have been filed at this time on the driver, Mr. Cortez.
