Smokin’ at the Ranch Barbecue Cook Off Results
The Rockett Ranch Café and Club in Milford held its first annual barbeque cook off last Saturday, Oct. 5. The turnout was less than expected. Speculation suggested the rain prediction could have been the reason or the 60% payout for prize money. It was decided next year would deliver an 80% payout and pray for better weather.
In addition to the cook off, the Rockett Ranch Café held a horseshoe tournament, live band and welcomed vendor booths. The band was cancelled due to inclement weather. No matter how many gather for The Rockett Ranch Café and Club events, a good time is guaranteed.
The Smokin’ at the Ranch Cook-Off benefited the Campfire Creek Therapeutic Riding Center. Campfire Creek Therapeutic Riding Center is an equine-assisted activity. The goal is simple. They strive to improve the lives of students with varying abilities. They teach children, adults and veterans of all ages how to ride properly, care for horses, and receive the benefits of creating a human and animal bond that promotes self-esteem and confidence. The cook-off was an IBCA (International Barbeque Cookers Association) sanctioned event. The IBCA was formed in 1988 by 9 people who wrote a constitution, by-laws, and cook-off rules. The intent of the IBCA is to offer a set of uniform cook-off rules that are fair and “user friendly” for the cooks. In 1989 they opened up the membership in IBCA. They currently have over 700 members.
In 2012 they had a record breaking year with 218 events from Mississippi to Hawaii. The average number of teams at these events is 35 teams. IBCA is the second largest sanctioning organization behind the KCBS (Kansas City Barbecue Society). Our regional IBCA pit is the Texas Barbecue Association based in Fort Worth.
