After 37 years of service to the City of Italy, Fire Chief Donald Chambers is not only hanging up his fire helmet, he is hanging up all the hats he has officially and unofficially worn at one time or another.

On Thursday, April 30, 2009, Chief Chambers retired from his role as acting fire chief for the Italy Fire Department. Since 1973, Chief Chambers has been a mentor and steadfast leader for the men and and women associated with the Italy Fire Department.

Climbing the fire ladder of success and assuming the role as Fire Chief in 1995, Chief Chambers has been a true hero for the City of Italy and it’s citizens. It has been a real comfort to us all knowing that Italy has had such a well organized and dedicated fire department under the direction of Chief Chambers.

Often first on the scene, Chief Chambers always seemed to have the answers before the questions even needed to be asked. Whether it was coordinating the landing of an AirEvac Helicopter in the middle of a highway, or trying to spot criminals from an airport tower or executing an order to his crews to get their tanks on because they’re rushing into a burning house as soon as they arrive, Chief Chambers consistently displayed the ability to generate a plan of action in the heat of the moment.

In appreciation, newly re-elected Mayor Frank Jackson and City of Italy employees, hosted a farewell retirement reception on behalf of Chief Chambers at City Hall in the City Council Chambers Thursday evening. Punch, cookies and a burning cake (minus candles of course) were served to the well wishers.

Pictures of Chief Chambers and his crews decorated the walls as everyone signed a card on their way into the retirement party. The Chief’s family, friends and appreciative citizens were on hand, to shake the hand, of one of Italy’s most respected figures, thanking him for a job well done.

Although he will be missed, Chief Chambers mentioned he will check in on the department from time to time and offer his assistance or advice if needed. Chief Chambers has ensured Italy will be in good shape thanks to the 17 volunteer fireman the department has available to serve the citizens of Italy and surrounding communities.

From all of us, thank you for all you’ve done for the City of Italy, Chief Chambers. You have left us with quite a legacy and a fire department we are all proud of. Best wishes to you and your family who have been as equally dedicated to the community.
