Thursday morning around 9:00 AM the Stafford Elementary first graders walked to town to the Italy Post Office to mail letters.

The first graders have been working on their writing skills by writing letters to their friends or family members and learning how to address an envelope. To make it really fun for their students the first grade teachers decided to let them walk to the post office and mail their letters. This also allowed them to use their math skills by purchasing stamps.

After the students mailed their letters, they were off to the donut shop to buy donuts. Here again they were able to use their math skills. A very tasty treat to end their walk into town.

Terry Adams, the Italy Postmaster said, “The kids are here and we have Simpson stamps all ready for them. They come on a sheet and we cut them all up so that they can peel them off and put them on their letters. We love it that they are learning how to mail letters and learning what the mail system can do for them. We teach them and then they use us and keep our post office running.”

Amy McCleskey (one of the first grade teachers) said, “We are buying stamps to put on our letters that we wrote to friends and family. The students addressed the envelopes themselves and now they get the chance to mail them. This allows them to work on their money skills by buying stamps. Writing the letter and how to address a letter are some of the other skills we worked on.”

Another fun day of learning at Stafford Elementary!
