Fifth Grade Science Projects Exhibition

Thursday May 28th the Stafford Elementary cafeteria was filled with science projects completed by Mr. McLean’s fifth grade science class. The projects were on endangered species. Each student picked an endangered animal, researched it and then put pictures along with information about the animal on poster boards.

Jonathan McLean (science teacher) said, “Today the fifth graders are doing their endangered species project presentations. Each of them has a project poster that tells a little information about their animal and each of them has a start button in front of their project. It is set up like a museum exhibit, when someone comes along and wants to hear more information about a certain project they push the start button and that person starts telling about their animals. The posters look very good.”

Maddy Washington (6th Grader) said, “I think the fifth graders did a little bit better job than the sixth grade this year. They have more information on their projects.”

As you walked down the aisles of science projects you could see many students from other grades pushing the big button in front of the projects that they wanted to know more about. By the end of the day many more students and adults knew a lot more about what animals are headed for extinction, thanks to these very informative science projects.

Cassidy Svehlak — Cassidy did her project on the Hawkbill Sea Turtle and she learned that they live on beaches in Yucatan and Mexico. (Cindy Sutherland)

Kasey Bales — Kasey did her project on Polar Bears, “I learned that they are carnivores and they live by the artic. When the sea is frozen over they live by the ice and when it melts they go back to shore to live.” (Cindy Sutherland)

Darrin Sisneros — Darrin’s project was on the Mexican Long Nosed Bat. Darrin said,“I learned that their life span is is 10-12 years and it doesn’t eat insects, it eats fruit and has at least 1 -2 babies a year.” (Cindy Sutherland)

Britany Chambers — Britany did her project on the Manatee. She said, “I learned that it eats 40-90 percent of it’s body weight and it only has one calf every three years.” (Cindy Sutherland)

Kevin Johnson — Kevin did his project on the Bald Eagle and had this to say, “One of the things I learned about the Bald Eagle is they eat fish, birds and other mammals.” (Cindy Sutherland)

Janae Robertson — “My project was on the Great Prairie Chicken and I learned that the Great Prairie Chicken is very colorful,” explained Janae. (Cindy Sutherland)

Raven Harper — Raven’s project was the Sea Turtle and she learned that Sea Turtles can live up to 45 to 70 years. (Cindy Sutherland)

Cassidy Childers — Cassidy’s project was on the Jaguar and Cassidy said, “I learned that they spend most of their time on the ground and they only eat mammals. They are Carnivores.” (Cindy Sutherland)

Levi McBride — Levi did his project on the Parigren Falcon. He said, “I learned that it is the fastest bird in the world. It can fly 200 miles per hour. They are about 15 to 20 inches long. They eat other birds, ducks, reptiles and sometimes bats.” (Cindy Sutherland)
