Guess who turned ninety-six this month at Trinity Mission? Well let me tell you, it was: Odell Kelley, Helen Honsicker and Lillie Speer! June Frame turned one hundred this month!

I had the opportunity to speak to some of the birthday folks and this is what some of them told me about what they have learned so far in their many years of life.

Evelyn Jenkins turned eighty nine years old on June 19, 2009. She said, “Some advice I can share with you is, you have to be a friend to have a friend.” She told me she had been married fifty-nine years. I asked her if she had any advice for young married couples and she replied, “You have to learn to give and take and help one another and love one another and you should do just fine.”

Odell Kelley was born on June 27, 1913 in Mount Calm, was one of twelve children and was raised on a farm on Mill Creek Road in Hamrock which is South of Italy.

When I asked Odell what he had learned in all his 96 years he teasingly said, “I have learned everything, I can say the multipulcation tables forwards and turn around and say them backwards.” He went on to say “I am thankful I made it this long. My brother Ervin Kelly lacked 21 one days of making one hundred when he died.” I asked him what new inventions he saw come about in his lifetime and he said, “I saw the first television and I saw the first airplane. The first time I saw that thing flying in the air it about scared me to death. We didn’t know what it was at first. Then we were told that it was an airplane. The telephone we had was the kind you had to crank.” He went on to say" I have seen prices on everything go up. I married my wife Alice Vestal in 1938 and paid the preacher $1.75 to marry us. That was a bargain. We were married 65 years.

Carolyn Powell (activities director) said, “Time flies when you are having fun and at Trinity Mission we try to have fun everyday. Today everyone was excited about celebrating birthdays.”

Cordell Clanton turned ninety-three, Dot Harris turned eighty-three, Harlan Presley turned ninety-two, Mary Fite turned eighty-eight and that wraps up the birthdays for the month of June at Trinity Mission.

Happy Birthday everyone!
