On Saturday morning, the birds were singing, the sun was shining and all was right with the world. That’s how some people felt. That was the day Roy Glaspy was awarded the first scholarship given by Hobbs Feed on Hwy 77 and 34, next to Mansell’s. The newest business in town, owners Joyce and James Hobbs want to be a part of this community.

After he came to town and set up shop, James Hobbs approached the administration about helping a senior student with college. “I got in on the scholarships at the tale end of school. We used the essays from the other scholarships and chose Roy’s. I really liked what he had to say. Roy is not exactly an ‘A’ student but he tries hard and gives his best effort. I am pleased that a well-rounded young man like Roy got it. I know he appreciates it (scholarship),” James Hobbs said.

Roy, son of Lisa Poarch of Italy, graduated from Italy High School in May and will attend Blinn Jr. College in College Station in the fall. He will travel next week to his new home and school begins August 31. “I will study kinesiology for now,” Glaspy said. “I want to transfer to A&M after Blinn and eventually, I want to be a football coach and come back to Italy and give back to the community.”
