Brandy Hamilton found her niche at Stafford Elementary
Brandy Hamilton graduated from Steven F Austin and received her degree in Radio and TV Broadcasting. She had her heart set on being a sports reporter and did internships all through college preparing for this career. “I found it an extremely difficult field to get into. I always wanted to travel, so fresh out of college I became a flight attendant for Delta Airlines.” Hamilton continued, “From the airlines I then went into the personal training field. While being a trainer I started working for a charter school in Colorado working as a para professional (teachers aid) in the special education department teaching children with disabilities and realized I loved teaching.”
When Brandy moved back to Texas the first thing she did was to enroll herself in an alternative certification program to become a certified teacher.
Hamilton explained, “I am a special education teacher. This is a half a day program. We have kids in here Monday through Wednesday from 12:30 to 2:30 PM. The PPCD (Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities) program is specifically for children with disabilities. The program is set up to help these children get ready for pre-kindergarten. We are able to do speech services if they have speech challenges, we teach them the proper way to hold a pencil, help them learn the foundations of how to write, social interaction, right behavior verses wrong behavior and it works. This is a really good program. One of the little boys they had last year that had just turned four was going to be back in this class but because of this program they were able to move him straight into pre-k so, kids are able to graduate out of the program. We have a four year old that comes with us from Monday through Wednesday but because this is a three day program we actually take him Thursday and Friday into the Pre-K class so he sees what takes place and it helps him to make the adjustment.”
Another thing Brandy likes about this program at Stafford Elementary is the inclusion program. She explained," Inclusion work means working with special education children in their general education classrooms. So instead of pulling them out and having a resource room like they still do at some schools, we actually keep the kids in their classroom and just have a special education teacher come in and co-teach. So you help the special education kids without ever having to pull them out of their classrooms.
Brandy is married to Troy Hamilton and has two daughters, four year old Sydney and two year old Courtney. She loves to workout in her spare time and spend family time with her family.
“I fell in love with teaching and I love the elementary kids. I love it here at Stafford Elementary. Everyone has made me feel right at home. It is a great family atmosphere here and I just love how helpful everyone is. I plan to stay for quite a while.”
Welcome Brandy Hamilton we are glad you are here!
