Whirled Peace!
At ten o’clock Monday morning at Stafford Elementary the front yard of the school was covered with Stafford students holding whirling pinwheels up in the sky. It was quite a site to see! The students made the beautiful and brightly colored pinwheels themselves and were excited to be part of the International Day of Peace project.
Carolyn Maevers (principal) explained to the students that there were students and adults all over the world spinning their pinwheels, “Today, September 21st pinwheels around the world will be spinning – they will be in the United States, Britain, South America, Australia, the Middle East, Canada, Africa, Europe, Asia – all over the world. They will be in schoolyards, in fields, on highways, in parks, outside of homes – all to show unity in our world for peace everywhere.”
It is Pinwheels for Peace’s opinion that children are deluged with conflict and war on television, video games, magazine articles, and newspaper articles. It is their hope that through the Pinwheels for Peace project the students can make a public visual statement about their feelings about war and peace.
It was a peaceful morning today as the many pinwheels spun in the beautiful blue sky showing us there is always hope for peace.
