The Italy School Board of Trustees approved replacing the roof and heating/air conditioning units at Stafford Elementary and George Scott gymnasiums at its monthly meeting Monday evening.

Total cost for the proposed project is $107,453. Jimmie Malone, superintendent, said the funds for this construction project will come from federal stimulus money.

The approved estimates came from Parsons Roofing to replace the roofs at a cost of $16,577. Lockridge-Priest will provide four 10-ton HVAC package units at a cost of $59,560 for the George Scott Gymnasium and $24,680 for four five-ton package units for the elementary facility. They accepted a bid for $1,336 from C.A. Wilson to tie into existing gas lines. J&S Electric will do the electrical work for a total cost of $5,300.

Tommy Morrison, board member, questioned the necessity to make the repairs to the gym at the high school. Speed Hamby, maintenance supervisor, said these were the oldest HV/AC units, installed in 1991, on both campuses.

Monica Boyd, business manager, said the district has $300,000 in stimulus money. The district has spent approximately $77,000 to date.

In other business, Malone named James McMillan as Employee of the Month.

Malone said McMillan, who has been with the district 11 years, takes pride in high work. The honoree has two sons and a daughter. “We appreciate the work you do.” Malone added, “Keep it up.”

Per approval from the board of trustees, Malone applied for a missed instructional day waiver for Stafford Elementary when the water was turned off following a major water leak in October.

The board approved financial reports for October. The district realized 15.96% of its revenue and spent approximately 21.01% of its expenditures.

Current student enrollment is 638 with 337 students at the elementary campus and 301 at the high school campus. Refined average daily attendance is 95.53%.

The trustees divided its 28 votes for the Ellis County Appraisal District members with eight votes going to Ken Marks and five votes each for Linda Alvarez, Johnny Johnson, Phillip Lynch and Joe Pitts.

Other items approved included the minutes from the Oct. 19 meeting with corrections and three budget amendments.

Due to the holiday schedule, the next board meeting will be Tuesday, Dec. 15.
