IYAA Week 5 – Helping young players reach their goals

Week 5 had it’s share of great shots, nice passes and fancy dribbling. The players really enjoy playing the games and the fans do a great job cheering them on. If you like excitement, stop by George E. Scott Coliseum next Saturday and check out the next generation of incredible athletes.

Game results in Italy:

Italy 10 (1st & 2nd Coed) consulted by Dustie Jones and assisted by Mailen Davis, put a “W” in the win column against Italy 9 coached by Deloris Harris. Tied 3-3 after the 1st quarter, Italy 10 just kept shooting and eventually won 11-5.

Gage Wafer lead Italy 10 in scoring with 4-points. Mason Griffin put in 3-points. Lacy Mott scored 2-points while Abby Evans and Sydney Lowenthal each added 1-point. Alex Jones, Courtney Riddle and Catie South secured rebounds while Jaylon Davis ran the point.

Italy 9’s Cornelius Jones and Reese Janek both scored a basket and Destiny Harris made her pre-game layup worth 1-point. Michael Gonzalez, Kambria Brooks, Zorian Burley, Jacee Coffman, Keyonna Brooks, Bryce DeBorde, Xander Galvan and Kiandra Diggs all did an awesome job rebounding and playing defense.

Italy 30 (5th & 6th Boys) coached by Andrea Windham and assisted by Scott Connor, held on for a 36-32 win against Hillsboro Maroon Saturday. Caden Petrey lead Italy 30’s scoring with 10-points. Levi McBride was good for 8-points and Ty Windham scored 7. Ryan Connor put in 6-points while Jorge Galvan, Thomas Crowell, David DeLaHoya and James Walton scored 1-point each in the win. Cole Falzerano helped slow down Hillsboro Maroon’s offensive attack by hustling on defense.

Italy 20 (3rd & 4th Boys) head coached by Scott Rodgers, had their hands full against Hillsboro Black. The visiting Hillsboro Black team had an 18-point 1st quarter that helped propel them to a 48-28 win over Italy 20.

Italy’s Ryder Itson lead Italy 20 with 10-points, including a 3-pointer. Rising stars Ty Hamilton and Payton Grant both scored 4-points while James McIntyre, Stockard Smithwick and Alex Hernandez each scored 3-points. Garrett Janek scored 1-point while Ethan Rodgers, Mikey South and Alex Garcia played tough on defense as Italy 20 outscored Hillsboro Black 7-6 in the 4th.

Italy 25 (5th & 6th Girls), Head Coached by Olympia Anderson and assisted by Vincent Anderson fell 1-point shy of winning their rematch with Hillsboro Black, 25-24. Ahead 25-20 at the end of the 3rd, Hillsboro Black was held scoreless in the 4th by Italy 25. Unfortunately, Italy 25 just managed 4-points in the final quarter and just missed pulling off the comeback.

Christy Murry did her part on defense while Charisma Anderson scored 7, Aarion Copeland scored 4 and Quintera Washington made 3-points on the offensive end. Cory Chance and Kimberly Mata scored 2-points each while Lizzie Garcia, Oleshia Anderson, Lyric Brooks, Moesha Griffin, Jasmine Hernandez and Taylor Henry each scored 1-point.

Italy 14 (3rd & 4th Girls), coached by Jerry Glenn, had a 9-8 lead over Hillsboro Black at the end of the 3rd quarter. In the 4th, Grace Haight put in 4 of her 8-points to ensure a victory for Italy 14.

Annie Perry, Chardonae Talton, Jashiryan Lacy, Elisha McClendon and Hannah Haight contributed 1-point each while Virginia Stephens and Carlee Wafer battled in the paint for rebounds.

Head coach Ken Norwood and his Italy 29 (5th & 6th Boys) team nicknamed, “Norwood’s Netpoppers,” are now 5-0 as they attempt to go undefeated for the 3rd straight season. Italy 29 pulled away from Italy 31, head coached by Shedrick Walker, in the 4th by outscoring their school mates 15-4 to seal the win.

Top scorers for Italy 29 were Kevin Johnson with 14-points, including a 3-point shot, Christian Gatlin with 11-points and Kenneth Norwood, Jr. who put in 8-points. Cameron Carter scored 7-points, Oshea Turner put in 6 and Kendrick Norwood added 5 more. Jarred Gatlin was good for 2-points while Jarvis Harris and Chasston Wilson put in 1-point each. Hunter Ballard pitched in on defense to help Italy 29 win by 22-points.

Scoring for Italy 31 were Markavian Thompson with 11-points, Lance McClendon with 10-points, Joseph Celis with 6-points and Fabian Cortez with 3. Michael Wilson and Michael Hughes put in 1-point apiece while Jacob Brooks and Daren Cisneros pitched in on the defensive side of the ball.

Game results in Hillsboro:

Italy 24 (5th & 6th girls) coached by Barry Byers and assisted by Monica Lambert, pulled out a 13-8 win against Hillsboro Royal Blue in Hillsboro. With the game still up for grabs, Cassidy Childers swished a long-range jump shot to seal the victory for Italy 24 as their record improves to 3-2.
