Lady Gladiators dominate in Kerens softball tournament

Kerens — The Lady Gladiators softball team, coached by Jennifer Reeves, Andrea Windham and Tina Richards, continue to crush their competition. In the Kerens Tournament held Friday, March 5 thru Saturday, March 6, the Lady Gladiators dominated to win the championship.

Kerens, Italy, Mabank, Cross Roads, Rice, Teague, Eustace and Venus fielded teams in the tournament. After the dust had settled, however, it was the Lady Gladiators holding up the championship plaque.

Friday, 10 a.m., vs. Mabank:
The Lady Gladiators lost the first game of the tournament 3-0 to Mabank despite 7 strikeouts by pitcher Courtney Westbrook.

Friday, 1:00 p.m., vs. Kerens:
The Lady Gladiators demolished the Lady Bobcats to win 9-1. From the mound, Megan Richards pitched and had 5 strikeouts. From the batter’s box, Baliey Bumpus and Alyssa Richards both hit triples and Megan Richards blasted a double.

Saturday, 11:00 a.m., vs. Cross Roads:
The Lady Gladiators overwhelmed Cross Roads to win 5-1. Courtney Westbrook pitched and had 11 strikeouts. Offensively, Bailey Bumpus, Alyssa Richards, Alma Suaste and Megan Richards all hit doubles.

Saturday, 2:00 p.m., vs. Rice:
Against Rice, the Lady Gladiators won 8-0 Megan Richards was in the middle of the diamond and pitched a total of 11 strikeouts. Megan Richards also hit a triple in the game while her little sister, Alyssa Richards, hit a double.

Anna Viers was a contributor to the success of the team with her 11 stolen bases during the tournament.

The Lady Gladiators posted the best record (3-1) of all the teams that competed in the tournament. Italy was awarded 1st place for their efforts. Megan Richards and Courtney Westbrook received all-tournament accolades.
