Earth Day is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. It was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental “teach-in” held on April 22, 1970. The second graders at Avalon ISD had fun celebrating Earth Day by planting a flower garden, a vegetable garden and getting closer to nature.

Every second grader planted their own plant from start to finish – they took it out of the little black carton, dug a hole and planted their plant. Of course it is not as much fun, if they didn’t get dirty from head to toe!

Holly Hernandez (second grade teacher) said, “My second grade class got together with Mrs. Lowe’s second grade class and Mr. Delbosque (Superintendent) and planted a garden for the kids to observe and watch grow. We also planted some vegetables such as tomatoes, squash and bell peppers so the students can see them grow. The kids loved it, they loved digging in the dirt. They were covered from head to toe in dirt. It was a blast.”

Mr. Delbosque said, “This is a life long learning experience. When they leave school they will have learned how to do gardening, and plant flowers and learn an appreciation for flowers and the process of taking care of something. Each child has their own flower, they have ownership of it and learn how to take care of it. So it goes beyond books and they can take this experience with them as adults. We are very, very excited about it and the students are too.”

Earth Day was fun for the second graders of Avalon ISD learning about gardens and spending time outside.

A great day at Avalon ISD!
