School board hires elementary principal, counselor

The Italy School Board of Trustees, in a split vote, voted to offer a contract to Tammy Wallis of Red Oak as elementary school principal.

In a five-hour called meeting Wednesday evening, the board interviewed three candidates for the elementary principal position.

Upon the recommendation of Jimmie Malone, superintendent, Larry Eubanks made the motion to extend a contract to Wallis with a second from Tommy Morrison. Marty Haight and Cheryl Owen cast their vote for Wallis as well. Paul Cockerham, John Mathers and Curtis Riddle voted against the recommendation.

In other business, the board accepted the recommendation from Malone to offer a contract to Kimberly Burns as school counselor for the seventh through twelfth grades. The recommendation passed unanimously.

Wallis earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1979 with a major in Elementary Education and minor in reading. She received her Master of Science Degree in 2003 with a major in Educational Administration from Texas A&M at Commerce.

Burns, a resident of Dallas, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Management from Florida A&M University. She received a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling from Prairie View A&M University.

The board took no action regarding a special education teacher.
