The Silver Spurs Silver Spurs 4-H Horse Club of Ellis County earned numerous awards at the Johnson County 4-H Horse Committee horse judging competition at the Diamond-W Arena in Alvarado on Saturday, January 15.

In the junior division, Brooke Lewis of Palmer won first place Overall, first place in Performance, first Overall Team, first in Performance Team, second place Halter Team, and 9th place Individual Halter.

In the intermediate division, D.J. Rhody and Allyssa Ballew, both of Midlothian, were members of the second place Halter Team.

Coach Julie Hinz of Italy, won an award as Best Coach of Overall Junior Team and won the Adult Jackpot Judging.

Silver Spurs members Liz Terry of Waxahachie and Chloe Lewis of Palmer represented the club by participating in the senior division.

“Our competition consisted of judging, trail, halter, equitation, English pleasure, horsemanship, western pleasure, reining, calf roping, western riding, and our reasons. It was a blast!” commented Ballew, the Silver Spurs reporter. “Thanks Diamond-W for hosting that, and thank you to all team leaders, people who brought out horses, and exhibitors for helping us on that dreary Saturday.”

The Silver Spurs 4-H Horse Club meets the first Thursday of each month at the Flying Dollar Ranch in Italy at 6 p.m. with horse judging practice at 5 p.m. The club works not only on judging, but also horse showing, speed events, general horse knowledge and community service projects.
